Other Heroes

Some of our heroes may not have won medals for their sporting achievements, but they are still winners in our eyes.

Josie Cichockyj is a medal winner however! Currently coach of the Mavericks Wheelchair Basketball Club based at the Y Club, she competed in 3 Paralympics (1984, ’88 & ’96) , has held every British track record from 100 metres to the 5000 metres, won the London Marathon and was one of the first women to break the 3 hour barrier.  Find out more about Josie here.

Joan Haworth – a trapeze artist and performer in the 1940′s, now in her late 80′s she is still an active member of the Y Club. Read her fascinating story here.

Sylvia Hood – changing the face of Manchester YMCA forever – one of the first women on the board!

Danny McGregor was an accomplished footballer in his youth and played for many of the football clubs in the North West. Later on in his career, Danny was the commercial manager for 20 years at Manchester United Football Club. A member for many years he is now President of the Manchester YMCA
