Welcome to Manchester YMCA Sporting Heroes.

In the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games the Manchester YMCA decided to celebrate the sporting achievements of its members through an oral history project. This exciting project will work in partnership with local school children, university students and a group of volunteers who will record the achievements and memories of older members of the ‘Y’.

The material gathered will then be showcased in an exhibition and accompanying dvd available for future generations to experience and enjoy. As well as offering physical fitness training facilities for people of all ages, abilities and ethnicities in Manchester and Salford, the YMCA has helped prepare many British champions and Olympians over the last century and it is their achievements we wish to now showcase.

The YMCA was also a physical fitness training facility for Manchester United football club during the 1950s and a plaque in the building commemorates those ‘Busby Babes’ who died in the Munich air disaster and who were active members.
